‘Tis the Season: it’s time to unwrap our 2023 Gift Exchange Trend Report!
We had an enormous response from companies, families and groups of friends excited to continue their White Elephant traditions with our virtual platform throughout the 2022 Holiday Season. Between November 2022 and January 2023, we hosted roughly 4,000 gift exchanges where over 57,000 gifts were given by over 56,000 friends, family and colleagues.
Because of all those games played and gifts exchanged, we can take a look back at last year’s season to find fun and interesting facts about what White Elephant gift exchanges look like across the nation. TOP RETAILERS
For the third year in a row, the top 5 retailers remain unchanged and on top in this year’s roundup! With its accessibility and convenience, Amazon cemented its place at the top of the list with more than 77% of gifts submitted on White Elephant Online (up from 72% last year). Etsy came in at #2 and is a favorite for finding unique and individualized gifts. Target came in at #3, Uncommon Goods at #4, and Walmart at #5.
Outside of the top 5 we saw some changes. Starbucks (#6) continued their upward climb, thanks largely to the popularity of their gift cards (who doesn’t need extra coffee this time of year?) and REI rose two places to land at #8 this time around.
After rising in the ranks last year, Urban Outfitters fell out of the top 10 this year. Who took their spot? Best Buy made a triumphant return to the list, sneaking in at #10.
TOP GIFTS
Mugs continue to be one of the most popular White Elephant Gifts. This year Kitchen Stuff and Novelty items squeezed into the top categories as well. Gift cards are also extremely popular but not as fun to analyze 😋
After being in the top 2 for 2 years in a row, the Echo Dot was knocked off its pedestal this time around. The top White Elephant Gift this year was a Mug Warmer, keeping right on theme with popular gift categories. The Tortilla Blanket and Yeti Rambler, two extremely popular gifts in 2020, made a triumphant return to the list this year as well.
OTHER HIGHLIGHTS
The longest game played was 2 hours and 48 minutes long! While there were only 43 people playing, the game contained a whopping 108 steals & swaps.
The largest game had 91 players!
The state that played the most games was California!
